Seagate has been a leader in the development of the hard disk drives since releasing the 5 MB ST-506 drive in 1980, the first 5.25-inch hard drive.
In 1991 they introduced the 7,200 RPM Barracuda line, which remains their high-end offering to this day. They purchased Maxtor in 2006.
On 19 December 2011, Seagate finished its acquisition of Samsung's Hard Disk Drive business.

Linear Tape-Open (or LTO) is a magnetic tape data storage technology originally developed in the late 1990s as an open standards alternative to the proprietary magnetic tape formats that were available at the time. Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Seagate initiated the LTO Consortium, which directs development and manages licensing and certification of media and mechanism manufacturers.

LTO-1: First commercially available in September 2000. Ultrium-1 specification is now Standard ECMA-319. Initial capacity of 100 GB. Initial data transfer speed of 20 MB/s (maximum). Tape encoding is RLL 1,7
